The Lowell Rural Fire Protection District serves a 23 square mile area that includes the City of Lowell and the rural communities of Fall Creek and Unity. The district boundaries surround Fall Creek Reservoir and includes the northern shoreline of Dexter Reservoir. The district provides structural and wildland fire suppression, EMS first response at the ALS level, vehicle extrication, water rescue, low to high angle rescue and HazMat first response. District personnel provide fire and EMS safety public education programs for all ages and provide fire and life safety commercial inspection and plans review.
The District employs a full-time Fire Chief, a half-time Administrative Assistance , a full-time Training Coordinator , a Captain and a Lieutenant. During the summer months the district tries to employ temporary firefighter/EMT to supplement its Volunteer membership. The district also operates a Resident Volunteer Program and Intern Program. The Resident Program provides living accommodations for 3 personnel that are required to staff duty shifts throughout the month.
The Volunteer Program provides training, learning opportunities and experience for persons that wish to volunteer whether they live within the fire district or not. Volunteer members staff 24-Hour duty shifts once every 6 days.
The District operates two structural engines, two rescue units, one tender, one wildland engine, one wildland/structural reserve engine,one wildland pickups, a water rescue boat, and a command vehicle. The main station is located within the City of Lowell and the districts sub-station is located in the community of Fall Creek. Currently, the main station is the only one staffed on a regular basis.
The area is well know for its recreational opportunities and natural beauty. The district is surrounded by national and private forest lands with access to lakes, rivers and other outdoor resources. Activities include fishing, hunting, hiking, biking, boating, and sailing. Nearby Highway 58 is a main east/west arterial providing a route to eastern Oregon and the Cascades. Lowell and Fall Creek also sport three of Lane Counties historic covered bridges and Dexter Lake is well know for the annual drag boat racing events and Crew Rowing facilities utilized by the University of Oregon and local schools.
